Lap and Dye refers to a Laparoscopy (a procedure which involves inserting a fine camera into a small incision just below the navel to examine the abdominal and uterine cavity) and hysterosalpingogram (HSG), which is an X-ray of the inside of the uterus and tubes which is achieved by injecting an opaque medium through the neck of the womb. Using the laparoscopy method, tubes can be tested by passing a dye through the cervix and watching for its appearance at the far end of the tube. The patient does not experience the immediate discomfort of an HSG, but there will be postoperative discomfort and the after effects of general anaesthesia. This test can be used establish whether or not there are any obstructions within the fallopian tube which could prevent the clear passage of egg and sperm.
The laparoscopy is used to determine whether there is any endometrial tissue growing within the uterus which could affect implantation, or identify the presence of any uterine fibroids, myoma’s or obstructions.
If it is found that the tube has some sort of impediment which prevents the dye from passing through, Chinese Medicine can be used to remedy this situation, provided there is no structural damage to the tube. Using the diagnosis made from the lap and dye, we know whether the obstruction is scar tissue, fibroid, or fluid for example. We can then classify the condition in Chinses medicine terms as 'Stagnation,' 'Damp,' 'Phlegm,' or 'Stasis,' and use specifically tailored herbs and acupuncture to clear this blockage. The Fertility Support Company works on a three month cycle, and recommends another dye test at the conclusion of the treatment to ascertain the extent of the changes.
