Ultrasounds and Foetal Testing |
|
 |
There are several schools of thought on the use of multiple ultrasounds on foetal development. Prevailing medical opinion however, holds that a series of exposures poses no threat to the foetus. There is only one study which has shown there to be an effect on foetal growth, and this slight growth retardation is more than compensated for as the childhood growth begins and intellectual development picks up. This is an Australian study reported on the Primal Health Research Centre. Authored by: Newnham JP, Doherty DA, Kendall GE, Zubrick SR, Landau LL, Stanley FJ, entitled: Effects of repeated prenatal ultrasound examinations on childhood outcome up to 8 years of age: follow-up of a randomised controlled trial. The Fertility Support Company recommends that Foetal Testing be done at The Fetal Medicine Centre (http://www.fetalmedicine.com/fmc-home.htm) which has an excellent reputation with an extremely low complication and miscarriage rate resulting from any amniocentesis. Further, unlike the NHS, the results from any tests which are done will usually be back within about 24 hours. |
