The Breech Service

Between the 34th to 36th week of a pregnancy the baby should be settling into a head down position. The chin of the baby should be tucked into its chest, its occiput should be aligned with the spine facing the mother's abdomen.

Breech babies can present with three positions; full breech where the baby is sitting cross legged over the cervix, frank breech where the legs are extened to they are facing up towards its face with its bottom over the cervix, or footling breech whereby one or both feet are sitting directly above the cervix.

The root cause of breech presentation is considered in Traditional Chinese Medical theory to originate from a deficiency in the Kidney Qi or Energy. The Kidneys have a strong symbiotic relationship with the Uterus, which in turn is the primary sournce of nourishment for the growing child. We as acupuncturists try to help the mother to harness and balance this Kidney energy in order to help the baby correct its poisition.

There is no important connection between the specific position of the breech baby and the efficacy or choice of treatment we as acupuncturists would give. The main factor for success of the treatment we apply is the timing, which is best executed at 34 weeks but can still be effective as late as 38 or even 39 weeks.

The pregnant mother only needs to come for one treatment with her partner as we demonstrate the treatment to them in order that they can perform it on themselves for the next 10 days which is the duration of the treatment. We supply the equipment necessary as part of the cost of the treatment, and recommend that the patient continues to apply the treatment for the full 10 days even when its position has corrected in order to maintain the ideal position.
